A Great Family Weekend

One of the things that has occurred to Amy and I in the past year or so is that we (and I mean each of us in the family) have realized that we do not really need more "things." We have been truly blessed. And though there are still things I would like to "have," they are usually much larger items. (I would love a boat, for example).

So when it came time for the holiday season, we told our parents this. They were great...and listened. My parents, for example, got Amy and I a night's stay at the Hasseman House (a bed and breakfast) and we are excited to go.

Amy's parents got the family a night's stay at Great Wolf Lodge! Good stuff. It's also cool to mention that Great Wolfe is very close to Uncle Chris and Aunt Meredith...so we could see them while we were there!

So off we went! We had a nice family time on both Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. We took in the sights at the Lodge.

Oh and don't forget the arcade! We rocked it!

The girls and I even had the chance to ride quite a few rides! Thanks to Amy for the great pics!

We even got Amy to ride one! For those that don't know, this is a BIG deal! Amy did a great job. We are very proud of her! I am not sure she could tell you much about it though...her eyes were closed!

After a great time at the Lodge, we did some shopping and then had a chance to stay with Chris and Meredith. I really enjoy seeing them. They are a really neat couple and I cherish our discussions. Oh, and they are great hosts! We went out to Japanese Steakhouse (the girls favorite) and had a nice meal!

All in all, it was a great weekend. Thanks to all who made it happen!

Wrapping Up the Holiday Season

As Amy and I have discussed, this holiday season has been more of a blur than most. With the purchase of our new building for HMC, and the subsequent moving of the business, we didn't take the time to really relax like we should. It happens.

On the bright side, we welcomed the New Year in a new way...and that was fun! Todd and Amy Brown were able to score some great tickets to the Columbus Blue Jackets game. We had fantastic seats in a Suite and were able to take in the game with some great people! And what seats they were! I will struggle to watch a Blue Jackets Game another way!

It is worth mentioning here that we owe Todd and Amy Brown a HUGE thank you for inviting us to be a part of the evening! At the end of the game, there were fireworks to celebrate Columbus' Bicentennial. Since this year was Coshocton's 200 year anniversary, I thought that was a cool thing to see.

After the game the group really just had the chance to hang out and have fun together. It wasn't fancy...but that was perfect!

Now as we are into 2012, I am very much looking forward to a GREAT year. Now I need to get out there and make it happen!

What a busy holiday week

This is one of those weeks that when you get to the end of it, you just say "Wow!"

It started with City Council business that wasn't the most jolly. But it's necessary dialogue to have...so I hope we move forward and continue to work in the best interest of the city.

Then onto a busy business week that included the exciting news that we bought a new office! That's right! Hasseman Marketing will be moving to 432 Main Street after the Christmas holiday! We are VERY excited about the opportunity to move into a building that will give us the opportunity to grow. I will post pics, videos, etc. when the time is right!

And oh by the way did I mention the week ends with Christmas? We are just starting the Christmas festivities with the Hasseman/Lahna clans. I am looking forward to having fun with the families. Today we started with a tradition that has been going on since we moved to the Ridgewood address. Each Christmas Eve morning we work with a group of neighbors to put out the luminaries. This year we covered our neighborhood and then some. The display literally goes on for miles. I will try to post a video later!

Great Sunday...and Holiday Season

So today was a fun day. Amy and I actually spent some quality time together. If you add that with some fun with the girls, and some good exercise...you have a good Sunday.

In addition, as we go through this holiday season we have one big change. Most of our family (on both sides) have moved their Christmas celebrations to different days. So we are able, for the first time really, to spend more time with each family.

There was a time in my life that I wanted to move from one place to the next. But now I am really enjoying the idea of spending more time and "being there" with each group. I hope that shows some level of maturity. But I think it also is symbolic of a shift I have made to consciously care about each person.

One of the people at our Christmas party last night was Sister Edith. She is my wife's great aunt and is a nun. I have always loved her. She is one of those people that makes each person feel loved and important. As I said last night, she has an ability to make each person she is talking to feel like the most important person in the world. I aspire to be more like that.

As this holiday season continues, I hope I make each person, each loved one, each family member know that I wish the best for them. Happy Holidays to each of you!

Super Fun Weekend

For the last couple of months, my wife has been telling me that she wanted to bring me to Polaris. She felt I would like it. For some frame of reference, we like to go to Canton and shop for the holidays, and she thought the area would compare favorably.

So this weekend, we loaded up the kids and headed to Polaris for some holiday shopping. We gave the girls some money so they could shop for each other...and for us. Then we split up and did our shopping.

I must admit I was skeptical about going to a major mall this close before the holiday...but we had a really nice time. It was busy--really busy at times--but the atmosphere was nice. And we were able to see a lot of stores we don't ever get to check out...so that was great.

So all in all it was great. Then Amy had planned for us to go check out the lights at the Columbus Zoo. We had heard they were nice, so we thought that might make for a great adventure to round out the weekend. And they were very pretty.

And it was REALLY cold! Maybe we are wimps (and we are) about the chilly temperatures, but we were in and out fast. For what it's worth there was a long line of cars heading out just as fast as we were.

We teased Amy about scheduling this, but as I told her, it's not an adventure if you know how it's going to go! Anyway, it was a fantastic family fun-filled folly (I love aliteration) and I was glad we did it!

Great Christmas Fun

What a great weekend! After the fantastic event from Saturday, we decided it was time to put up the tree! We had a lot of fun putting it up. I spent time while the girls were at dance getting it ready, then Amy worked on putting the lights on it!

After that we had a great time putting the decorations on the tree! Fun stuff as you can see!

Finally we had a tree that I think we can be proud of!

After it was all said and done, we watched Christmas Vacation as a family! What a funny way to end the day! Skylar wants to have a "Griswold" house next year! I must say, as we wrap up the weekend, I am glad to have had this one. I am starting to feel the holiday spirit now!

Annual Christmas Party

It's that time of year that the Annual Christmas Party took place here at the Hasseman House. It's always a great event for the whole family, and this year was no exception!

We started a new tradition a few years ago where the kids buy for another child that is going to be at the party. Then they do their exchange with kids only. It's fun to see how excited the kids get to receive AND give! After the kids get done with their exchange, the chaos continues. I love this pic below of Phil and Logan!

Then we head upstairs to do the "adult only" gift exchange. It truly has become a tradition like no other! We do a dirty santa where you can steal from each other. Fun stuff! I think Stacy Drennen was the "big" winner this year!

As some of you know John Lonsberry was home for a break from Afghanistan. We were lucky to have him home for this event...and he left the next day to head back. We were so glad he was able to attend...and the kids were too!

I will be the first to admit that I was not yet in the holiday spirit before this event. But it's a great way to kick off the season. As I look at the smiling faces at our friends, I am ready to celebrate this season.

Nice Presentation with the BPW

Friday morning I was invited to speak at the Zanesville BPW morning meeting. They asked me to talk to the membership about personal branding and marketing...and ways to improve in those areas.

It was a great group and I enjoyed getting to meet them! Here is a pic with me and the President of the chapter Andrea Patterson. I do enjoy speaking on topics like this...so fun stuff for me!

A Nice Night with Andrew and CHS Soccer

This year I was asked to be a mentor for a Senior on the Coshocton High School Soccer team. I wasn't sure if I was going to have time for the task...until I heard who it was. Andrew Miller is the first son of our great friends, Matt and Valerie Miller. Andrew is also a first class young man.

During the season I had the opportunity to see Andrew grow into his role on the soccer field. But more importantly, this gave me the chance to see him continue to grow up as a gentleman. This year has seen him excel on the field (along with a FANTASTIC CHS team), but also in the classroom as well. It really is good stuff. (I have told his parents that this is ALL my influence!:)

When I arrived the event tonight, I sat with Andrew's parents and they gave me a card. He had written a heartfelt message that would have made me tear up if I was not such a tough guy!

So as Andrew stood up in front being recognized with the rest of his Senior teammates, I was proud. I was proud to be able to "mentor" him this season. I am anxious to continue to watch him grow...and to help to mentor him in life. Great job Andrew!

A great time to be "thankful" with family and friends

Well it was our Thanksgiving time break and I feel like we made the most of it! Of course on Thanksgiving we went to both Amy's parents and mine to see the family. It was nice to only be going two places. Unfortunately it was because I made a mistake! I thought we were doing a group of my side of the family on Sunday...so I didn't go on Thanksgiving! Sorry!

But it was nice to get together with those two groups and to spend some actual time!

On Saturday of course it was time for "The Game." The Given's were nice enough to host the OSU/Michigan extravaganza at their place. It was a full house! Here is video of the group in the basement...and I think there was that many upstairs too!

Later that night I had a chance to see some friends from high school as we start to plan the 20 year reunion. It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years. But it was great to see them. Looking forward to a fun event!

It was a fun weekend, but I think I need to get back to work to rest!

A Week of Thanksgiving

As I look at my calendar for the next several days, I realize it is going to be a busy ride. But I am happy for that. Busy at work means we are (hopefully) meeting more and more client needs. And that hopefully means we are keeping our folks busy and employed. I am thankful for that.

It's going to be busy the next couple of days for sure. My charge is to make sure I am being thankful! It's the week of Thanksgiving!

Not A Dry Eye

Veteran's Day this year hit close to home for many of us this year. Lots of us know great men and women who served our country so that we can live a life that is free. This year, a good friend Sgt. John Lonsberry, has been serving in Afghanistan. He has been gone since June and his wife and three kids have been going on here in Coshocton. They are a wonderful family.

Last night after the holiday parade, a group of us gathered at the Yucatan because his kids got a great surprise. We gathered to sing Logan (the youngest) Happy Birthday. We had to wait until someone brought Logan a hat to wear before we sang. And the person that brought the hat...was John!

The reaction was priceless! John is only home for two weeks, but it was great to see his kids excited. Leah (his oldest daughter) in particular was very emotional. The place went crazy!

It was a great moment. As a funny side note, 5 minutes later, Logan (who just turned 5) was still asking "When will you sing Happy Birthday?" So we all sang a very happy rendition of the song!

A Great Parade

Last night was the annual Miracle on Main Street in Coshocton. This is the community kick-off to the holiday season and store owners were all open late for the throngs of people! Every year people pack the streets to see the great atmosphere and to watch the holiday parade.

I must say, this year the parade was really great. Miss Jennifer's Dance studio is always a hit as lots of girls (including Jade) are there to dance their hearts out the entire route.

But my favorite float this year was from Coshocton Trucking. Their theme was the Grinch Who Stole Christmas and they did a great job! Great job to them...and to all who organized and took part in this great Coshocton County tradition. Here's hoping this shopping season will be a great one for local retailers!

What a Weekend!

Amy and I had a fantastic time this weekend in Detroit. That's right...great time in Detroit!

We made the trip for a "Treat Em Right" Seminar for Send Out Cards. This is a business that Amy and I are involved in that we are extremely excited about! I would love to talk to anyone interested in it...but that is for another day! Anyway, we spent all day Saturday in an inspiring seminar that focused on personal development. I love attending seminars like this...and I loved the message.

Afterward we were able to catch up with SendOutCards Founder and CEO Kody Bateman. He was on stage much of the day, but still made time to talk to folks afterwards. It was great stuff.

After that we tracked down SendOutCards number 1 money earner Jordan Adler. Jordan is a really interesting speaker as well (as he was one of the trainers for the weekend) and he also wrote the book Beach Money. Great stuff.

And of course it is always great to have some fun time for just Amy and I. So after the seminar we headed over to the new Motor City Casino. Neither Amy or I are big gamblers, but thought it would be fun to take in all of the sights!

It was a great weekend and fun evening. Sometimes its great to take the time to re-energize yourself. I am so glad we did!

2011 Kiwanis Pancake Day

Yesterday was the Annual Kiwanis Pancake Day in Coshocton and it was a great event. Event organizer Jesse Marcencavage and Kiwanis President Belinda Williamson (and everyone else involved) did a fantastic job! I am anxious to see the numbers raised from this event. I have a feeling we might have a record breaker on our hands! Kudos to all of them.

It's always great to be a part of an event like this in the community. First, it really is a community event. It seems like everyone in town goes! Second, you know that with a successful fundraiser, Kiwanis can really have a positive impact on Coshocton County. And that is ALWAYS a good thing!

Lots of Opportunities

If you spend a lot of time reading, watching or listening to the news, you are probably totally convinced that the world is going to hell in a hand basket! According to experts, there are no jobs and no opportunities or prospects for jobs.

I find this curious.

In the last month alone I have had two good opportunities come in and sit at my desk. They are searching for folks to help sell their product...and they can't seem to find anyone who WANTS to do it! At Hasseman Marketing, we are always looking for new Account Executives to help us grow our company...and yet no one is lining up.

Why? My contention is, there are opportunities available in this economy. But these opportunities do involve some risk. Small business owners are looking for people who are determined, aggressive, and willing to be a partner in the risk of their venture. If you are willing to do that--and are willing to sell--you will be able to find a great opportunity.

Family Visits Kalahari

My family and I recently spent the weekend at Kalahari. This is an indoor water park, convention center, etc. in Northern Ohio. Great place. The girls were there for a Dance Workshop and we made the most of it!

What a place! If you get a chance to check it out with your family, I would recommend it. Actually, we have said that it might be a good place to do a summer meeting. There was quite a bit (inside and out) to do. And there was a ton of space for a meeting...or just for fun!

One of the rides was a Wave where you got a board and rode it. Fun! I may have been one of the "older" kids on it...but I had fun!

While we were on vacation this summer with family, I wanted to take a look at something that had happened several years ago. After trying to describe the event, I remembered that I had posted about it on this blog! So while in North Carolina I pulled up the post and pics and was able to share with the family.

Then while going through the posts, I was able to relive some fun memories with the family...and some great pictures as well. I told everyone that I was going to get back to posting...and I have not done it.

Today is the 4 year anniversary of my wife's surgery. If you have read this before, you know the one I am talking about. If not, check out November of 2007! At any rate, I am going to get back into posting here. Wish me luck...and check back!

A Busy Week

Amy has kicked off this year's United Way campaign. School has begun for the girls, and dance is not far behind. And then of course there is work, the upcoming election, and the new book. So yes, things are busy at the Hasseman House. But I promised to try and keep up with the blog, so I am making the effort.

Oh yes...for those that don't know, I am running for President of City Council here in Coshocton. Yes...I needed one more thing! I hope to be able to help serve my community well. A Nice Weekend

As I continue to to try and update my blog I thought it appropriate to thank my family for a nice weekend. I am very lucky to have a couple of nice (albeit slow-moving this morning) girls to raise. We had fun golfing yesterday even though we only had time for 4 holes.

And what can I say? Thanks to Amy for making us a family. Love ya all!

A River Runs Through It

In my recent travels, I have been lucky enough to have visited several different towns and cities that have rivers as a hub of their community.

I was in Marietta a few weeks ago for work and was impressed by that community. It's a charming little town along the Ohio River and has built a nice business community around their college and the river.

Then most recently I was in Cincinnati (and Kentucky) and watched as another area utilized their natural resource to spawn business as well. My family and I went to the Cincinnati Aquarium, which is located in an Easton-like shopping center on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River.

In both cases, these communities have done something that Coshcoton has failed to do as of yet. They are utilizing a wonderful natural resource to build a business-friendly atmoshere where small businesses can thrive. Marietta, in particular, is not that different from the community of Coshocton. The businesses that are located on their Main Street could be transplanted and survive, if they have the traffic. And that's where the river comes in!

Several years ago there was a beginning of a discussion of creating a "River Walk" in Coshocton. I think we need to open that discussion back up in earnest. Done right, a River Walk could create a nice new reason to stop in Coshocton County. It could easily tie in with the trails at Lake Park, and could allow us to once again utilize this natural resource that we as a community have most often ignored.

At it's most complex, the River Walk could be a massive project including the drudging of the river to allow for larger boats, large concrete paths, and free standing structures. At it's simplest, the project could simply begin with a path...and see how it progresses.

I am not sure the best way to begin this project. But I am convinced it is a project that needs to begin.

Taste of Coshocton

I saw someone tonight at the Taste of Coshocton Event that commented about my lack of posts...so here I am!

Last night was a great event called the Taste of Coshocton at the Lake Park Pavilion. It's the kickoff to the United Way Campaign here in Coshocton County. For those that don't know, my lovely wife is the Executive Director of the United Way. And from the looks of last night, she really knows how to throw a party!

The event was absolutely packed. There was fantastic food from local vendors, great entertainment from the Union Cheerleaders and Miss Jennifers Dancers, and there were fun prizes.

It was a great way to kick off the campaign. Nice job to Amy, Libbie and all of the volunteers that make it happen! Here is an article in the Coshocton Tribune about the event!

New Book!

A New Biz Venture for...JADE!

Remember last year when the girls started their own business? Well Jade is back at it! She has ordered some shirts imprinted with the message "Coshocton Rocks!" She (with the rest of us helping) is tie-dying the shirts and is going to sell them at First Fridays!

She is doing a great job and is very excited about it. So please come and see us at First Fridays and get yourself a shirt! They are only $10 per shirt...so please help us make her a success!

Her big sister, Skylar, has helped her get these ready. And there are a variety of sizes and colors to choose from!

Exciting News For Me!

Many of you know I have been working on a book. It is a book on marketing for small businesses titled "Think Big Marketing For Small Business." A few weeks ago I sent in a query to a publisher and they had asked to see a manuscript. On Monday I got a call from the publisher telling me they want to publish the book! I am very excited!

I will have more updates as we proceed, but I wanted to announce that exciting news here!

A Big Day on A Bike

Jade has been a little slow in deciding she wanted to ride her bike. But a couple of days ago she decided she was going to do it right then! She said "Four year olds can do this!" and she set out to make it happen!

After quite a bit of time before dance she stopped, frustrated. But after dance Amy picked her up and took her to the fairgrounds...and...

Hillary and Chris's Baby Shower

My sister and her boyfriend had a baby shower this past weekend. Yes I was there! Yes...I love my sister. Because there is simply no way I am attending another baby shower! This was very nice and they did a nice job for it...just not my thing!

That being said we got some fun photos to share! Above is a nice shot of all my girls! Then below you have me and Bella. She was so cute there!

And then the girls played some of the games with mom. It was good stuff. Congrats to Hillary and Chris!

Congratulations Chuck!

Yesterday was also the Big Surpise Party for Chuck. Chuck is Amy's dad and he recently retired after 40 some years at Jones Metal. Friends and family gathered at our place yesterday and we all had a chance to wish him congrats! Yes...he was surprised.

Amy and Chris were hard at work on the kitchen chores. Chris and Meredith worked all day to make the food awesome!

With an audience that big, you know the girls had to figure out some way to perform!

The nice new deck was well utilized with the nice crowd!

It was a great night for family and fun!

Spring Cleaning in Coshocton

Clean Up Day was a big success yesterday. They had over 150 volunteers show up to the Courtsquare (and that's just who signed up) to help. If you drove downtown yesterday, you saw a lot of red t-shirts and orange bags! Coshocton's Mayor, Steve Mercer said a few words as he and Amy sent the crews out to Clean Up Coshocton!

The group started around the Courtsquare (a beautiful place in Coshocton) and then moved all over the city.

As you can see from the pictures, the folks involved made a difference in the community...and had a good time doing it. Thank you to all involved for helping to make Coshocton County a better place!

Cleaning Up Coshocton

For the last several years, Amy has been involved in helping to make Clean Up Coshocton Day a reality. This year, there was a coloring contest at the schools in order to promote the big day. This year Amy and our honorable Mayor went to the schools to present the winner!

In addition, the event can't happen without generous sponsors. Here is a shot of Amy with Phil Hunt as they present a check to the cause.

A New Addition

I have spent the last few days (with the help of friends) building onto our existing deck. We have wanted to do this pretty much since we moved in. The deck we had was fine, but was overtaken by our table and chairs. So this will give us a chance to use the deck more.

I have been really pleased with the progress we have made so far. We put the posts in the ground on Thursday night...and now we are here! Not done...but not bad! This last shot is tonight. It's raining and nearly dark...but I am pleased with the progress.

The Final Dance Competition of the Year

The girls had their final dance competition of the year this past weekend...and what a way to end it! It was a long day for Skylar and Amy as they left the house and 8am and got back around 11pm. Jade went up later with Valerie (thanks Val!).

But the girls all did well. The routine that Jade is in with the younger girls got a high gold and Amy said it was "really cute." And the routine that includes all the girls in Elite--Jail Break--got a Platinum! That's as high as it gets.

In addition, Skylar's duet with Casey won a judges award for "facial expressions." And both Casey and Skylar were invited to go to "nationals." So that was really cool for them. All in all it was a really good day for Elite!

I have been saying quite a bit recently that everyone needs to get a "mulligan" when it comes to Social Networking. I believe that we could use a "do-over" because even the most technicially saavy often don't understand the enormous and sometimes devastating effects of a goof online now.

What an Easter Sunday

So it's been about 12 hours since my last post. But my how much has happened! Not long after I signed off I got a call from my mom. My dad fell last night and broke his pinky toe on his right foot. But unfortunately that description just doesn't do it justice. This break required surgery to make sure it actually stayed on...it was brutal.

In addition, my grandpa (who was in Twin City Hospital) needed to be transferred to Mercy. So mom needed to head there...and I went to bring dad home. Fun stuff. (As of right now, we are still waiting on word about Grandpa...please keep him in your prayers).

But the girls and Amy went ahead and went to church...and then to Chuck and Connies. It was a pretty day (as most of you know) and it was a good time for a nice picture.

Then the girls worked on a fun Easter Egg hunt!

After Dad was released from the hospital I brought him home. We got him into the house and got him some pain medicine and I went to the task of cleaning up the blood. Seriously...did I mention it was brutal?

But then the my sister Hillary, her boyfriend Chris and her daughter Bella came over. Bella just turned 4 years old and is just about as cute as one human can be. She and I played together on the swings, in the yard, and generally had a fun time.

Then my girls and Amy showed up for Easter dinner...and it was a great night. My other sister Nicole, her son Logan and daughter Kaci came as well. It was fun to see everyone!

It was a long Easter day...but it was great to see the family!

Easter Morning

It was an exciting morning at the Hasseman House this Easter morning! The girls were up before 7am with the anticipation of the Easter Bunny. Neither Mommy or Daddy were thrilled with the time...but enjoyed watching them look for Easter eggs.

It's always fun to see the excitement as they hustle to find all of the eggs. And it's even nice to hear them share the spoils...sometimes!

It's funny. As I look at the pictures we took this morning, the girls have gotten away from the "smile for the camera" look. They are into a "goof off for the camera" stage. I have no idea where they would get such a thing!

And at the end of the excitement, the girls start to chill out. Mommy has decided to head back to bed for a bit. Dadddy has entered the office to update the blog. And all of the Hasseman's start to get ready for a busy Easter Sunday! Many Blessings to all!

A Quick Getaway

Several months ago Amy and I took a quick trip up to Canton to get away. We had both reached a maximum threshold and needed to decompress. That trip did the trick.

Well based on a number of things we decided we could use another quick getaway...and decided on Canton again. We headed up to take in some shopping (this is one of Amy's favorite places to shop) and eating.

We even had a chance to have dinner with one of Amy's friends from college and her husband. Chris and Matt are a really nice couple and we had a nice time catching up.

And it is always nice for a getaway. I will say Canton was a zoo this time...and I was excited to get back to Coshocton!

A Fun Spring Day

It's tough to predict the weather in the spring time, so we just try to enjoy it when it's nice. The other night the girls got home and it was nice (though a bit chilly). So they took out the chalk and decided to add some arts and culture to the driveway!

The girls had a nice time...and there are certainly worse things they could be out doing!

Playing Catch Up

So it's been since March 22nd...and I am back. I have been guilty of keeping up with Facebook and neglecting my blog. But I have decided that I want to make a concerted effort to maintain this too! So in an effort to catch up...here are some back pics.

Part of the challenge in keeping up is Dance Season. The girls, as you know, are a part of the Competition Dance Team with Miss Jennifers...Elite Dance Force. It's a great activity for the girls...but it can take over all of life. The girls have had a good year competing and we are really proud of the job both of them did!

Both Skylar and Jade had their own routines...and they were in a couple together as well. This one above is call "Jail Break" and includes all of the girls! I won't go through the details of all of the results...but will post the most recent competition's results for you!

Down on the Farm

My father in law Chuck is getting ready to retire. He has been at Jones Metal for 43 years and has certainly earned it. A few years ago he and Connie moved into a farm house...and Chuck has taken that to heart. What started as a few goats is now 6 goats, 3 cows, and (as of a few days ago) 4 horses.

The most recent horse is one that can be ridden...and the girls got the chance today. They had a ball! Skylar was the first to go and was a little nervous. But she did well.

Jade waited patiently for her turn. After she saw her sister go, she was pretty cool about the whole thing. Here is her on her first ride with Connie catching the moment!

It was just a fun day at Old ChuckDonald's Farm!

Elite Competitions

Now is the time the Elite Dance Force sort of takes over our lives. We are having competitions and peformances just about every weekend...and they are going extremely well.

Last week was the first official competition and both girls did well. Actually the whole group did well. Skylar is in a duet again this year. She did well with Casey last year and they are back at it. They placed first in their division yesterday for the duet...and they are doing great in large groups too.

Jade got first in the number 5-6-7-8 as well! Here is a shot of Jade with her buddy Grace Miller!

They are having fun...and that's what's the best about the whole thing. I am proud of both of my dancers!

A Proud Moment for Coshocton

It's been a while since my last post (as someone recently pointed out) so I thought this might be a good time to get at it again.

For this post I wanted to congratulate our local Smurfit Stone Container Plant. They have a fantastic group of guys and were voted the "Plant of the Year" this year. I am really proud of the group.

This group takes a great deal of pride in what they do...and how they impact our community. Want proof? This was the 9th year in a row they were the largest giver to the local United Way campaign.

Congratulations to the plant. You all deserve it!

Elite at the Mall

Well the girls have begun the "performing" season for Elite. As you may have read (and if not, check out the next post below) The Elite Spectacular is Saturday March 28th. It's a great night and a fundraiser for the girls. Please get tickets from us if you are interested!

But last Saturday the girls performed at the Zanesville Mall. They did 5 or 6 numbers and from what I understand they did great. I was at another mall at a video shoot, but we have some pictures anyway!

Each year Miss Jennifers Elite Dance Force does an event to showcase the girls here in Coshocton. It's a great opportunity to see the Elite Team do all of their numbers...and they are really good!

I Need A New Goal!

And I need your help! I got a comment that I have not been posting...and I haven't. And with a lack of comments I wasn't sure if anyone noticed. But now I want some comments on this post.

I need a new fitness goal. I have done the P90X thing (yes I would recommend). And I am looking for something to keep up the momentum. But the half marathon and triathlon I was considering (both on the same day May 3rd) are out because of work. So I need a new goal to focus on to keep me working out! I can feel myself getting lazy!

So what do you think? What can I do for a new goal? I posed this question to the family and they are still working on it. But what say you?

Bowl For Kids Sake

A great community event (and a fundraiser for United Way Agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters) Bowl For Kids Sake was today (and tomorrow) in Coshocton. It's a lot of fun and for a great cause.

Hasseman Wins Gold

The wonderful research tool called the internet gave me more results on my cousin Brice. He won a gold medal this weekend in a wrestling tournament in Bulgaria. Brice is on the right...with the article below!

VARNA, Bulgaria – Bryce Hasseman (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) won a gold medal at 84 kg/185 lbs., one of three U.S. freestyle wrestlers to win a medal on the final day of the Dan Kolov International on Sunday.

Hasseman defeated U.S. teammate Eric Luedke (Iowa City, Iowa/Gator WC) in the gold-medal finals, 1-0, 3-3, 3-0.

It was the second straight week that Hasseman defeated Luedke in the finals of an international tournament. Hasseman won a 0-1, 1-0, 3-0 decision over Luedke in the finals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. last weekend.

Both U.S. wrestlers won three matches to qualify for the finals. Hasseman stopped Serdar Boke of Turkey in the semifinals, 2-1, 2-2, while Luedke beat Adrian Recorean of Romania in the semifinals, 2-0, 2-1.

The other U.S. medalist was 2008 University World champion Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), who won a silver medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Stacey's 40th Birthday!

As you know if you follow this blog at all...we do 40th birthdays up right! Well last night it was time for Stacey Drennen's 40th birthday party...and yes it was a surprise. There was a large group of us at the Valley Inn outside of Zanesville awaiting her arrival.

She was certainly surprised...and she had a chance to address her followers!

It was a really fun night...with great looking groups of ladies!

All in all it was a fun and photogenic time.

It was a great evening culminating with Jeff making arrangements for folks not to drive home. It was a very nice and generous thing. Now for...the rest of the story!

Amy and I got dropped off at home and as the van left sight we realized that we did (wait for it) not have keys to get in the house!

So at a very late hour, my lovely bride and I tried to break into our own house! After trying all of the front doors and windows, I went around back and climbed up onto the deck. In attenpting to do so I tipped over the now empty rabbit pens (dumping rabbit poop all over) and landing on my back.

But not to be deterred I set the pen back up to try again. (Nothing like being locked out, cold and smelling like rabbit poop for motivation!). I finally got onto the deck only to find that all of those doors and windows were tightly locked as well. Amy and I considered breaking the windows, but decided that then we would be cold on the inside too!

After what can only be described as a sad attempt at burglary, Amy called Valerie Miller (we were hopefuly she would still be awake!). Valerie came over and brought us to her house...where we slept for a few hours.

When we awoke, I realized that my truck (with garage door opener) was at the office! That would have been a handy thought last night! So now I am warmed up and home...and realizing that this was a fun evening. Thank God we don't have them all of the time!

I promised there would be announcements coming right? Well here is one I am really excited about.

There is a lot going on in the Hasseman household right now. The girls are getting deep into the dance rehearsal schedule because competitions are right around the corner. All of the girls are hard at work...and we are proud of them!

Amy is busy with wrapping up the United Way Campaign. She has done a magnificent job this year despite a tough economic climate for giving. I am really proud of the job she has done in the fundraising side. And she has also introduced a few new programs that are sure to have long term community impact.

Oh...and there is a new cool promotion coming up soon that I will tell you about on here with United Way and Papa Johns. I will let you know when it is up and running!

I have been busy working the first part of the year...and have several exciting projects on the horizon. More to come on that in the near future as well. Make sure to check back in!

The Annual Cavs Trip

It's become a bit of a tradition. Miss Jennifer's Elite Dance Force has been performing at a Cleveland Cavs game each year. It's fun for the girls...and actually a lot of fun for the adults too! We got to Cleveland early, as we were concerned with the roads (they were fine by the way). So before we headed out to grab a bit to eat...the girls had to get all ready to perform!

Then we joined a group for dinner before the game!

Jade and Lael were excited to get dancing!

The girls did a great job of hitting it on the court. It's tough to get pictures and watch at the same time...so I took this shot and watched my superstars!

You would think this would make me feel short...but I get this at work everyday. Dustin is 6 foot 6!

We got this shot of us as we watched the game. The Cavs won, by the way. This was their 22nd straight home win...tying a franchise record!

After that it was back to the hotel where the girls did a bit of swimming and playing with friends. Not a bad evening out when we weren't sure it was going to happen at all with the weather.

The girls do lots of dance competitions and engagements during the year...and this is my favorite. It's a fun one for the whole family!

Volunteer Award

On Monday Night, my family all gathered in Dennison to recognize a family member that had a HUGE impact on an organization this past year...through volunteering. My Mom was an intrical part of getting the Uhrichsville Clay Museum up and going this year...and it is truly an asset to Tuscarawas County.

Mom was recognized along with other volunteers from Tuscarawas County organizations. She had the opportunity to say a few words in front of the crowd. We are very proud of the work she did this year and the impact she has had there!

4 More Weeks

Those of you who know me know that I have been doing the P90X workout program. I have been pretty good about being dedicated to the workouts (with limited exceptions) but been more inconsistent with the diet portion. And although the week in Vegas was basically a no go, I went back and re-did the week last week.

So now I am getting ready to start week 10 of 13. I have decided to double up and run in addition to give myself a 2 a day version for the last couple weeks. My hope is that if I can really push this last stretch I can see more results. I guess I figure I have come this far...what the heck?

A Vegas Trip To Remember

Really...I do! As many of you know, we usually go to Vegas each year to attend an industry trade show. It's a HUGE event and we usually enjoy it and get a lot out of it.

This year, we were going to head out on the 13th, but I decided I wanted to be out in Vegas on my birthday...so we left on the 12th. When we got there we hooked up with Coshocton friends (also out there for the show) and had dinner at Margaritaville on the strip! It was great!

We had some fun with the group and they even brought me a dessert...which I gave away! (I am not morally superior here...I had beer instead!).

The next day we headed to classes and got a lot out of those. Here is a shot of Amy and I goofing off in between them.

That night we headed to the Lee Wayne awards ceremony. It was a fun night with great food...and it was great to catch up with some friends from the sales force! It's a more formal night as the attire is concerned...but managed to lighten it up!

As you might imagine, we had a great time!

The next several days were intense trade show days. I would share pictures here...but it's mostly of promotional products! Needless to say, we still had fun. On the last day we knew we were headed back to winter so we headed outside to soak up a few minutes of sun! Here is a shot of me in front of New York New York!

Stop and Smell the Roses

I just got this email...thought it was worth passing along!

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin. It was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds - and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping - continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention, was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried - but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk - turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.

This is a real story.
Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world - playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

Marketing Article in the Paper

The girls and I went to Sears the other day to get some family pictures taken. It's been a while since we had done that and we wanted to update them. We pulled some low res images off the website...

Christmas Twig...Updated

I have been asked about an update on the Christmas Twig at the Hasseman House. Well Amy did the work for me. She sent out this email to a few folks...and I will include it!

So I'm sure you are dying to know (several have asked) what happened with the Hasseman Christmas tree, right? -Cause you have nothing else to worry about, I know. Well...we decided we should keep the Christmas tree that we trecked up the hill and cut down ourselves. If nothing else, we will remember this Christmas tree.

Oh well, despite our lack-luster tree, we had a great Christmas. We realized that we are so lucky and fortunate to have such a wonderful family, great friends and live a very blessed life here in Coshocton, Ohio, that the tree really doesn't matter.

Christmas Day with the Hassemans

Christmas day is a great, long and exhausting day for us. But we love it! We started the day at exactly 7am (because that is when we told the girls they could wake us. They had tried at 1:30am unsuccesfully). And we got into the spirit quickly as the girls got some great gifts.

And both girls got a Wii! They were very excited!

Then we hit the road and headed to Connie and Chuck's (Amy's parents) house. The girls got a second tumbling mat! Thanks to both parents for doing that...they are VERY excited! And it was great to see Chris and Meredith and Todd!

Then we were "on the road again" as we headed to Amy's Grandma and Grandpa Shryocks! There we caught up with more family...including Dan and Christine!

After a while it was on to our next stop. We stopped at my Grandma Peg and Grandpa Tom's house next. It was fantastic to catch up with both of them. Grandma has been in a nursing home...and it was great to see her in good spirits. And I think Grandpa was in a better mood just having her home!

Then we were off to the Hasseman side of the family! As was the case with each stop, it was fun to see those we don't get a chance to see very often! Below you see my Grandma Patty taking in the festivities...and my Aunt Jill caught off guard by the camera flash!

I am not sure...but this is the first time this year that I felt in the spirit. It might be that we have been busy...or maybe something else...but as tired as we all were...I really enjoyed today. Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas Eve at Mom and Dads!

For Christmas Eve we went to my parents house for some holiday festivities! We got a nice shot of the girls.

We ate some great food. And then we commenced with the gift giving! My niece Bella was really into the opening part!

The rest of us enjoyed the show!

Even my nephew Logan had a good time!

We felt bad because we had to leave early to go to church. But thanks to Mom and Dad for hosting a great Christmas event! Love ya!

City's New Website

The City of Coshocton has a new website! One of the initiatives that Steve Mercer wanted to implement when he was running for office (mayor) was an updated website for the city.

He tapped into Tom Broadwater's expertise. And Tom even did the site for free! I think it looks fantastic! Check it out!

A Visit From Handy Matty

My good friend Matt Miller came over to the house today to help me install a garbage disposal. Ours has been on the fritz for about 8 months...and Matt generously offered to help. Actually to say I helped is really loose. Matt did all the work.

While he was here we replaced the disposal, found what a mystery switch does in our office, replaced the switches in the upstairs bathroom, and even looked at a toilet in another bath. I may rent him out each Sunday.

It's hard not to feel a bit insecure around a guy like Matt! He can do everything! I am not sure Amy doesn't want to trade. Anyway, thanks Matt! I really appreciate the help!

Christmas Party

We had our annual "friends" Christmas Party last night...and we have pictures to prove it! Santa made an appearance to the delight of the kids.

And the adults had a "dirty santa" game where we could steal gifts from each other. Fun stuff. We had a good time in spite of the dead tree!

Amy sent out this email yesterday to a group. If you follow this blog you know we go out and cut down our tree. This year we chose a beautiful one...at least it was a beautiful one!

Here is something to laugh at. Our pathetic Christmas tree. I thought we had a very pretty tree this year. Unfortunately for whatever reason it didn't absorb any water. We did everything we normally do...bring it home...cut off the bottom, etc.... Well it's now Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. It's hidious! Oh yeah, because there are no needles all of the decorations are falling off too. Do we get a new one or just cleanup the needles and laugh for the rest of the week? The kids will look so cute sitting beside a big stick Christmas morning!

Skylar in the Band

Though yesterday was stressful in getting her there...Skylar had her first performance with the school band yesterday. They went to the local elementary schools and performed. The Coshocton Tribune caught some of the action...and here is a shot of her from the paper!

Jade's Piano Performance

Amidst the cold and the holiday parties, Jade had her annual piano performance last night at Windsorwood. She, and the other kids who performed, did an outstanding job. She had a really nice outfit on. And since I forgot my camera for the performance (bad dad!)...I wanted to take a few shots once we got home!

You can call me the biased dad...but I think she looked beautiful!

CTCC Holiday Party

It's the season of Christmas. And it's the season of parties! Today was the Coshocton Town and Country Club Christmas Party. There was a great turn out...and I think we all had a nice time.

Jennifer Nelson did a great job organizing the event. There were fun crafts for the girls!

HMC Holiday Party

Since this is the first year Hasseman Marketing has had 2 full time employees, this was our first year for a holiday party. Shanda and Dustin (and families) came over to our house for a nice dinner! Here is a shot of Dustin and Megan!

Church Christmas Play

The girls and I are involved in this year's Church Christmas Play. Last night was dress rehearsal nd they are having a fun time with it.

Skylar has a speaking role as a commentator in the Christmas County Spelling Bee.

Jade is in the choir and has a dancing part.

And we have quite a few of the girls friends that are in it as well! Here's Jensen Hocter who plays a contestant Amanda Allen.

Madison Miller has a solo in the production! She does a great job with it!

And here is Lacey Richcreek. She is featured as a signer in the play. We could all learn a thing or two about attitude from this fantastic little girl!

The big performance is tonight! Wish us all luck!

Scooter Loves the Snow

More Holday Traditions

With the weather being a bit more mild right now, Amy and I decided to keep up the decorating. (Mainly this was Amy's decision. She lives for this!). So we went down to the office and put up a few decorations and Amy worked around the house too.

Then we headed to the Christmas Tree Farm to select the live tree. We go out as a family each year and cut down our tree. This will be the one that we all decorate and Santa will put the gifts under.

We have a nice one this year as you can see!

And the girls even helped us drag it back down the hill! I am sure we will have more pics later as we decorate...but this is where we are now!

It is fun to have these family traditions during the holidays. Thanks to Amy for doing such a great job decorating! It makes the house feel like Christmas!

A Busy Thanksgiving!

As you will notice, this Thanksgiving Day was a busy one for the Hasseman clan. After the race (see below post) we headed to Connie and Chuck's house (Amy's parents) for Thanksgiving. Amy's aunt and uncle Bev and Art were there too. It was a nice time with some fantastic food!

After we got home we decided it was a pretty nice day, so we thought we could try and do some outside Christmas decorations. I usually grumble and growl about this process, but this year it was not too bad. (Props to Jade on taking this picture!).

And then we got into the spirit on the inside of the house as well!

And as you can see I am into the holiday spirit already!

Jason Mitchell at The Yard!

We took the girls to The Yard last night for Dinner to celebrate the Wednesday that feels like a Friday. The Yard is a nice pizza and italian place here in Coshocton...and we met Heather and Chad for the night.

We were pleasantly surprised to find Jason Mitchell performing with his acoustic band. And Jason was nice enough to let me and the girls listen to a brand new tune "Slow and Steady" in his truck. It made the girls night! They even asked Jason to sign their Nintendo DS's...and Jade said "I am SO writing this in my diary!"

So cute. Finally, Jason was nice enough to pose for this picture with the girls. (Thanks to Chad and his new phone for the picture!). They felt like they had backstage passes! Thanks Jason for making them feel special!

If you get a chance to see Jason perform...I highly recommend it!

An Early Morning Turkey Trot

It was a cold, cold morning to do a 5K...but there was a dedicated group of us that made the trip to Granville this morning to do a Turkey Trot! A Big Thanks To Valerie For the Picture!

The back story here is that Shanda (my office manager) told me 3 months ago that she would do a 5K. Little did she know that the next day she would have a training plan and motivational tips on her desk...and a motivator in the office! Three months later, we were there to do it! And better yet, Dustin decided at the last minute to do it too!

So Dustin, Shanda and I met up with Valerie, Krista, Shari, Jennifer, and Brandie and Chris to go for it!

I am proud of all the gang...but of course Miss Shanda! Great job!

The Workout

As we have mentioned, Amy and I have started doing a new workout called P90X. It's 6 to 7 days a week and it is tough.

It's a tough time of year to start a fitness program since the holidays (and parties) are here. But we are giving it a try! Tonight's workout is Plyometrics (or Jump Training). As the trainer Tony Horton says, "It's the mother of all P90X workouts."

Amy and I were doing our best to keep up...and Jade got a couple of shots!

OSU Michigan

What a great party! Phil and Krista were nice enough to host a fantastic party for the OSU/Michigan game. Phil is a huge Michigan fan and the rest of us were...well...not Michigan fans. So I give him a great deal of credit. We had a great time. And we have some shots to capture the fun!

Headlong into Dance

As many of you know, with the school season comes the season of dance. It's a lot of running for sure...but the girls really love it. And I think they get a lot out of it too. Both girls made Elite Dance Force again this year (the competition dance team).

As you may recall Skylar did a duet last year and she and Casey (her partner) had a lot of sucess. We had told her that she would be taking the year off due to the time and money involved. After some discussion (and some math to show her how much more it actually would cost) we came to the conclusion that she would do fundraisers to help. If she showed us that she took that seriously, then we would consider it.

I told her "Skylar if you raise $500 then it will make my decision very easy."

So she (and Jade helped too here) of course raised over $500.

Congratulations to Skylar and Casey who apparently will be in a duet again this year! After all the work, she deserved it.

P90X

It's been a while since I have had a chance to post. And as you know, that usually means more things going on...not less. And yes the Hasseman's have been busy. The girls (and I) are getting ready for their church Christmas Play. Now that I did a play with dad...why not?

And the other big thing we (Amy and I) have started is a fitness program called P90X. Though I promise not to bore you with the details, it is a brutal workout regimine with 12 different discs and a comprehensive nutrition plan. There is actually a "fitness test" that you are supposed to take before you even begin the program! It's nuts!

Anyway, we are three days (this will be 4) into this 90 day program. Wish me luck in my efforts to make a huge leap in this fitness program. Right now I am so sore I just want to curl up into the fetal position and sleep. Ahhh...health!

Deal or Not a Deal!

What a night at Ridgewood High School on Tuesday night! The Coshocton Chamber/Port Authority and Community Development Fund created the first ever "Deal Or Not a Deal" event in Coshocton County.

This fun event was created in order to raise funds for economic development in our area. And as you might have guessed, Amy was a part of the planning and execution of the event. Don't worry, HMC was there to video the event as well!

The host of the event, Casey Claxon, did a great job. And it was great to see the various banks, pizza shops, and other businesses and organizations come together to help the community.
