A Disturbingly Good Read

One of my Christmas presents was the book "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham. I have really enjoyed many of his fiction novels, so it was nice to see him expand to this non-fiction story.

But wow is it disturbing. If you think you are innocent until proven guilty in America....think again.

I recommend this one.

This book is disturbing, and sad. These men lost most, or really, all of, their lives to over-zealous police and prosecutors... and the pain and years of turmoil all of the families had to endure was heartbreaking. This is not how things are supposed to happen in America. I am a big supporter of the police and prosecutors, but they need to understand that while we want crimes solved, we do not want them to convict those they "know" are responsible, we want them to convict those they can proove are responsible.
I once managed a fast food restaurant that was robbed, and the manager on duty was the main suspect. He ended up failing a lie-detector test, but the police could never get anything sustantial to use against him. Maybe he did it, maybe not. What bothered me was a comment one of the detectives made..."I've never seen an innocent man fail a lie-detector test". I thought to myself, "but surely this isn't the first time you haven't been able to nail someone who failed one...so aren't those men still "innocent" under our system?
